GUIDELINES FOR DEALING WITH AN INCIDENT / ACCIDENT
Accidents/incidents may occasionally occur during club activities. DTTA aims to deal with them in an efficient and effective manner to safeguard participants, minimise the risk of further occurrences, and return as quickly as possible to normality within the club.
An accident/incident most commonly involves personal injury but DTTA also takes seriously other incidents of, for instance, theft, damage to property/equipment or abuse (including harassment, bullying, assault and violence) that may infrequently occur.
DTTA has access to a first aid kit and at each session. The Head and Assistant Coaches are all trained first aiders and will take responsibility for implementing DTTA’s accident / incident procedures when necessary. The following points are a guide to action in the event of either an accident or incident:
Stay calm but act swiftly and observe the situation.
Is there danger of further injuries?
Listen to what the injured person is saying.
Alert the first-aider who should take appropriate action for minor injuries.
In the event of an injury requiring specialist treatment, call the emergency services.
Deal with the rest of the group and ensure that they are adequately supervised.
Do not move someone with major injuries. Wait for the emergency medics.
Decide whether the session should continue and if not, make arrangements for participants to get home safely.
If a child (ren) is/are involved then follow the club’s Child Protection procedures.
If the incident involves sexual harassment or racial abuse, follow the relevant club procedures.
Contact the injured person’s parent / carer.
Complete the DTTA incident / accident report form.
